Who is John Kelly?

A True Hobart Local: Deeply Rooted in the Community

John Kelly is a fifth-generation Tasmanian, born and raised in Hobart. His connection to the city runs deep, intertwined with its people, places, and rich cultural fabric. From an early age, John has been an active member of the community, lending his time and talents to various organizations and initiatives.

Serving Hobart with Passion and Commitment

John was elected to Hobart City Council in 2022 and has since been advocating for a better Hobart. But his experience as a leader in the community extends far beyond this. John has successfully steered various businesses - such as the State Cinema - and various social causes - such as the Footsteps Towards Freedom sculpture project and Heritage Tram Society. He was nominated as Hobart's Citizen of the year in 2016 for his "outstanding service to the community".

Restoring Hobart's Iconic Heritage

Throughout his 35 years of entrepreneurship, John has dedicated himself to the restoration and renovation of some of Hobart's most iconic heritage buildings. From the State Cinema to the Soundy Building, to the Crescent Hotel, his efforts have brought these treasured landmarks back to their former glory. Currently, John is undertaking the complete renovation of Australia's oldest continuously licensed hotel (1807) – The Hope and Anchor, located on Hobart's historic waterfront. These revitalized community spaces now thrive as venues that employ locals and entertain both residents and visitors.

Diverse experience

Aside from his current work on Hobart City Council, John is also involved with various other community organisations, including:

  • Wellington Park Management Trust

  • Maritime Museum of Tasmania

  • Safe Water Hobart Association

  • Hobart Tram Restoration & Museum Society

  • North Hobart Traders Association
